The STEM Students of Swann Middle School have a Class Motto - "Show What You Can Do!!" Our students are inspired by people in the world that show Outrageous Effort in everything they do. “Why Are WE Here?” Our students are here to Show What THEY Can Do!!. Our class hashtag is #ShowItOwnIt because our students not only show what they can do, but they own their learning, their mistakes and their discoveries.

In our studies we have been blending math, science, language arts and history into our STEM projects in an effort to support many curricular areas in our school. They have explored geometric shapes, vectors and forces as they design bridge trusses, and have gained an understanding of sustainability and re-use as they used 3D Printing to design and create hydroponic systems to irrigate plants. They incorporated a variety of curricular topics from their classes into their Makey Makey Presentations. Students will interact with visiting experts to learn skills for the projects they are doing and the careers they will be studying, like working with North Carolinas Department of Labor Amusement Inspectors as they design their rollercoasters.

Students have begun a service project to design items that can meet needs, including classroom items for productivity, and devices that teachers will be using in their instruction like math manipulatives and aids for Science, Language Arts and History class. We also plan to reach out to the community (possibly nearby businesses and the children’s ward of the hospital) to determine their needs. They will be using drone and robotic technology to develop videos that will be useful to our community business and families.

Our students are blending digital learning skills with essential standards as they study technology systems and discover how they relate to our world. By their ownership in this class they are becoming Empowered Learners and Digital Citizens who can exhibit communication, collaboration, resourcefulness, innovative design, problem solving, and critical and creative thinking. They are so excited about the prospect of sharing all of their creations, interacting with the educators attending NCTIES, and maybe even designing something to meet their needs. They plan to put on a great showcase.
