Why are we here? We are here to inspire. We are here to engage. We are here to promote student learning. We are here to grow with our students as educators. South Topsail Elementary School believes that a Makerspace environment allows students and teachers to accomplish these objectives. We have launched our first Makerspace this year and the kids are flourishing. Our students want to show NCTIES how they are using our new Makerspace to demonstrate their knowledge of classroom content in creative and innovative ways! Students across grade levels will be sharing with conference attendees their thought process behind their creation, demonstrating how their invention works and explaining how it connects to their classroom curriculum. My focus as an educator is to show how beneficial Makerspaces are to elementary school when directly tied to curriculum standards. My students want to share the enthusiasm they have for learning and of course their awesome inventions! Students will be displaying inventions across multiple content areas and grade levels. This student showcase will not only inspire attendees but provide them with an understanding of how a Makerspace can be seamlessly integrated into the classroom without a loss of instructional time. Student projects will range from open-end inventions to extensions of county-based performance tasks and standards. Technology such as 3D printing, Makey-Makey, green screen, Spheros, LEGO WeDo, and more will be used in various student inventions. Let our students at South Topsail Elementary School share their new found love for learning!
